Frost protection

Under certain circumstances, it is necessary to add antifreeze to the circulating water to prevent it from freezing in winter. The addition of antifreeze changes the physical properties of the circulating water. The effects on heating technology and boiler selection must therefore be checked by the boiler manufacturer.

The following points must be observed when using glycol-water mixtures:

  • When using antifreeze, observe the instructions in the EC safety datasheet (e.g. toxicity).
  • Galvanised pipes are not permitted in hot water systems, as antifreeze can dissolve zinc.
  • Water-antifreeze mixtures may lead to increased sludge formation in combination with foreign substances and/or dissolved salts. Suitable separation systems are required in the network.
  • When designing the system components (e.g. pumps) and the pipe system, it must be taken into account that the specific thermal capacity of the antifreeze is lower than that of water. In order to transfer the required heat output, the necessary volumetric flow rate must be increased accordingly.
  • The heat transfer medium has a higher viscosity and density than water. A higher pressure loss must therefore be taken into account when flowing through pipes and other system components.
  • In conjunction with antifreeze, the limits for conductivity often cannot be complied with. Therefore, only fully desalinated water with a conductivity of < 10 μS/cm should be used as fill and top-up water.
  • Glycol-water mixtures must not be used without the addition of corrosion inhibitors due to their corrosive properties, which are stronger than those of water. However, these corrosion inhibitors must already be contained in the antifreeze. The use of additional dosing agents is not permitted.
